Viewing Ortigia by water is a spectacular vista with the combination of colorful blue water with the backdrop of this historic part of the city. Plemmirio is a natural conservation area located 5 km across the main harbor of Siracusa. Removal of any marine life is prohibited in this area and there are restrictions relative to boating activities/access which makes this one of the most pristine sea areas in the Mediterranean. Massolivieri beach is located within the Plemmirio marine protected area and is a dream setting: a pristine sheltered sandy beach located between two cliffs leading to the turquoise sea.
The most popular beach resort area in Siracusa is Arenella. With one of the longest sandy beaches and most beautiful blue waters, it’s no wonder people cherish this special location. The beach resort offers full services for guests, including umbrellas/lounges, restaurant, bar and showers/restrooms. You can also give cliff diving a try from the bordering rock structures.
Just a few kilometers from the city is the famous Fontane Bianche beach, overlooking the Ionian Sea and nicknamed the Caribbean of Siracusa. This beach is particularly loved for its white sand and extensive shallow crystal-clear waters. There are several beach clubs and bars/restaurants on the beach.
Further south is the Spiaggia Gelsomineto beach, also known as Marchesa. Situated between the sea and the lush pine forest of the Riserva Cavalgrande di Cassibile, this is truly a unique beach setting. Avid hikers can explore the nearby cliffs and coves on a marked/maintained walking path. Also, diving enthusiasts and underwater photographers will find a vibrant, beautiful ecosystem below the water.
Calamosche beach, better known by the locals as “Funni Musca”, is a beautiful sandy cove bordered by two large rock structures that act as a natural wall, sheltering it from the currents. This results in water that is always calm and crystal clear. The beach is ideal for both sun worshippers and water enthusiasts. Swimming towards the cliffs on the sides of the gulf, where the seabed is deeper, you will have access to sea caves and ravines that are home to an abundance of marine fauna.
Continuing south, the Vendicari reserve is where serenity and peace reign supreme. With kilometers of untouched white beach, you will feel transported back in time as you experience a beach has not been changed by man. Inside this nature reserve, the entire ecosystem lives undisturbed. The breathtaking landscapes, thick vegetation that suddenly opens onto a crystalline sea is a pleasure for the eyes and touches the soul. Long golden beaches lead to rocks overlooking a deep sea.
Marzamemi has been a strategically located trading port in the Mediterranean since the 10th Century. It has two ports: the Balata and the Fossa. The Balata is a place of unparalleled beauty, where the Ionian and the Mediterranean meet. You can explore the historical tuna fishery, Casa Cappuccio, or its charming shops and restaurants alone its cobbled streets. It is said you will depart Marzamemi as a different person than when you arrived. You will feel the sensation of having been immersed in a place where time has stopped
At the extreme edge of south-eastern Sicily is Portopalo, famous for its historic tuna fishery (the oldest in Europe), Tafuri Castele and Capopassero island on the Pirates' Bay. As the southern-most point of Europe, Portopalo is a popular destination. The sense of physical and cultural distance from the vital European city centers is felt in the rural landscape and immensity of the sea surrounding this last edge of Europe.
